Contains mild spoilers.
Episode One: Shows like Primeval often run the risk of coming off cheesy or just plain awful but the writing for Primeval is fairly strong. It becomes evident right away that the show is fun while still aspiring to being quality science fiction. The characters are well-drawn and likeable from the start which is key since a premise like this means they are bound to be in harm's way more often than not. I especially like Andrew Lee Potts as Conner. It is evident that the big mysteries of series one will be the anomalies and the fate of Helen Cutter.
Episode Two: This episode does remind us of the budgetary restrictions of British telly and the monsters do bring up thoughts of B movies of the '50s and '60s nonetheless it remains exciting. The inevitable love interests are established including a triangle between Stephen, Abby and Conner and the growing relationship of Cutter and Claudia, complicated by the possibility that his wife Helen is still alive and interested in him.
Episode Three: Love the way this episode starts out, one of several humorous moments in the episode. The anomalies are found in water as well as on land and Cutter proposes a theory to narrow the search area for anomalies. Bristling between Cutter's team and the government agents begins to appear. Nice to know that the American government isn't the only one capable of conspiracies and cover-ups. Cutter finally meets with Helen in a nicely scripted scene. Really like how the actors don't overact or exaggerate the characters despite the over-the-top premise of the show. Ben Miller makes a great baddy.
Episode Four: One of my favorites. Really great story. The costume design and filming locations were particularly good in this episode. The scene where Stephen discovers all the anomalies was filmed somewhere quite beautiful. If you watch this episode and don't want a pet Dodo you just don't know what cute is. Not ashamed to admit I got a tad teary-eyed at the end of this one.
Episode Five: Finally a way to make golf exciting! I love the use of classic horror/thriller elements in this episode. We see more development in the relationships between Abby and Conner as well as Claudia and Cutter. Also get to see a softer side of Helen and our first flying monsters. I want a Rex!
Episode Six: As Helen says the inevitable from the moment the anomalies are discovered happens in this episode. If there are anomalies to the past then there must be anomalies from the future as well. The future beasty is a tad disappointing in design but I still wouldn't want to meet one in a dark alley. We discover some interesting aspects of the relationship between Helen and Cutter as well as Helen and Stephen. Stephen reminds me of Owen from Torchwood-not really a guy I'd like as a mate. If we learned one thing from time travel in television and films it's that if you change one tiny thing you change everything, and suddenly Claudia Brown doesn't exist, a fantastic cliff hanger for series two. It's been a pleasure watching with you!
